That buzzing sound you hear on the Storrs, Connecticut campus isn't alarm clocks, but bees. The University of Connecticut has established its own apiary (or a bee yard) to produce honey for the campus dining halls.  The apiary is apart of a larger campus sustainability project to buy locally grown food or produce food on campus. Already, UConn breeds it own chickens and some students grow fruits and vegetables to offset the school's environmental footprint.

Feeding the large campus is no easy feat. Dining halls serve about 151,000 meals per week when school is in session. So while these projects may not feed the whole campus, it's saving the school some cash. With the price honey, the school dining services can are saving around $16,000 a year. Now that's a sweet deal (sorry).
