"Here's your sub, would you like a credit card with that?" OK, that conversation never happened, but offers of free subs in exchange for credit does. One student had to sign for the card in a Subway restaurant! Many credit card companies lure students in by offering free t-shirts, Frisbees, or other 'free' stuff in exchange for filling out a credit application.

Sure, you can get a credit card and not use it. But, hey, free money! Not exactly, college seniors have around $2,500 in credit card debt. It's tempting to hold off on payments, but credit card companies don' t tell you about the outrageous finance charges given to students. So 100 dollars could turn into a few hundred quickly if not paid off.

College students know that a large chunk of change goes to buying textbooks. Enter the internet. An article in Wired magazine profiles the effort of two former textbook executives to create an open-source site called Flat World Knowledge. The goal is simple: to provide a free alternative to ballooning textbook costs. The service starts in January with 8 textbooks written by scholars in their respective fields, so free stuff takes patience.
