With the price of oil continuing to go up and the public turning to more efficient vehicles, Universities have turned to bike sharing programs to encourage students and staff to keep their cars at home. Emory University has plunked down $250,000 for their bike initiative and sharing program which provides 40 bikes to students to sign out and use for the day.
Ripon College in Wisconsin goes ever further by providing free bikes to freshmen who keep their cars at home. Already, they have signed up half of the freshman class for bikes worth $300. Other colleges like Duke University and the University of Washington have also established bike-sharing programs on their campuses to popular demand.
